Seattle was voted the number one city by WalletHub’s annual report of the most livable cities in America. WalletHub based its findings on a survey of cities with 300,000+ people measuring its findings on 5 criteria. Those criteria are 1) Affordability, 2) Economy, 3) Education & Health, 4) Quality of Life, and 5) Safety.
Seattle ranks number 1 for “economy” and number 1 for “education and health” rankings. It’s no surprise as anyone who lives here can tell you the economy is booming. We have nearly 1,000 people moving to Seattle per week and housing and rent prices have been off the charts. A recent cool-down in rent prices has offered some relief for renters this year.
Seattle also fared well in other categories. We are tied with San Francisco and Austin for “high income growth,” and also have the highest percentage of “population over age 25 with a high school diploma or higher” We also tied the top 5 spots for most coffee shops per capita (don’t we always win that one?)
Seattle ranked near the bottom at 50, in the affordability criteria. Housing prices in Seattle have exploded over the last 3 years, with seemingly no end in sight. Home prices jumped $100,000 in one year spanning from August 2016 – 2017. Home prices have continued to grow in 2018, but not as quickly. Zillow’s estimate for Seattle home price growth puts it at 6.8% for the next year.
